TUMUT HISTORIC MUSEUM
Our 5/6 students enjoyed an excursion to the Tumut Historic Museum as part of their History unit ‘Australian Colonies’. Students enjoyed learning about life in the early colonies as well as the history of Tumut and our local area. A huge thanks to Marcia Cummins and her volunteers for the wealth of knowledge they shared with us and maintaining such a great historical resource.
This week all McAuley 5/6 classes went to the Tumut museum.
In history we are learning about the colonisation of Australia and the effect it had on the indigenous. At the museum we learnt that in the 1800’s it was hard for the Aboriginal tribes to move around the Tumut area as people had begun building a town.
There was an old-fashioned kitchen that included a wood heated stove and the Coolgardie Safe (an old fridge). We also learned about Miles Franklin and why she is important to Tumut, saw old medical equipment including a wheelchair which had its own chamber pot inside!. The most interesting part for me was a room filled with children's toys, clothes, and equipment. Thank You to the Museum organisers, we found it very interesting.

On the 7th March we went to the Museum. It was so interesting and we learned all about our town in the past. The very nice volunteers Ms Cummins and Mrs Fisher showed us around. We got to learn about Miles Franklin and all the amazing things she did in the war. We got to look at an old camera and a lace maker. We also got to see an old steam engine as well. All the students in our class really enjoyed it. We even got to look at old toys and kitchen appliances. It was the best and coolest.
