Dear Parents

Many of you will have been taught by your parents the importance of good manners. Throughout my 38 years of teaching I have endeavoured to highlight the value and significance of good manners and treating people with respect, being civil to those we come into contact with.

 Incivility includes mocking or belittling someone to teasing people in ways that sting to telling offensive jokes to texting in meetings.  We may not mean to make someone feel disrespected, but when we do, it has consequences.

Incivility is contagious, and we become carriers of it just by being around it.  It affects our emotions, our motivation, our performance and how we treat others. 

Researchers in Israel have actually shown that medical teams exposed to rudeness perform worse not only in all their diagnostics, but in all the procedures they did. This was mainly because the teams exposed to rudeness didn't share information as readily, and they stopped seeking help from their teammates. 

 Being truly civil means doing the small things, like smiling and saying hello and listening fully when someone's speaking to you. Of course you can have strong opinions, disagree, have conflict or give negative feedback – but civilly, with respect.  

Why does civility pay? People will see you as warm and competent, friendly and smart. In other words, being civil isn't just about motivating others. It's about you. 

 Small things can make a big difference. Thanking people, sharing credit, listening attentively, humbly asking questions, acknowledging others and smiling all have an impact.

 When we have more civil environments, we're more productive, creative, helpful, happy and healthy.

Saying “I love you” is simple, painless and free. It is one of the most powerful sentences in the world. People who know they are loved (because they have been told) are able to offer the world their love in return.

You can now enrol online at McAuley by selecting the link on the school website (below). Alternatively, please contact the school for an enrolment form. To complete an application form you will need to submit the following information. Original documents will need to be presented at the time of interview.

• Birth certificate (not commemorative) or passport
• Certificate of Baptism (if applicable)
• Student’s immunisation records 
• Family Law, Personal Protection Order or Other Relevant Court Orders (if applicable)
• Last report from previous school (not applicable for Kindergarten enrolments)
• Visa grant notice for permanent and temporary visa-holders (if applicable) – for both student and parent(s) / legal guardian(s), including passport copies of parents
• Any medical reports and/or other assessment reports for students with additional learning needs (if applicable).

All parents, carers, teachers and students are encouraged to download our SZapp - which will further assist you to stay connected with McAuley. You will be able to view and access school newsletters, documents and get instant notifications from the school. The app is another contact point for parents. It is our aim to provide many platforms which will assist you to keep up to date with happenings at McAuley.

We celebrated our wonderful Grandparents and Senior Friends on Thursday. The Hall was packed to the rafters - and what a great morning was had by all! Many thanks to all families who brought along a 'plate' to share.

Wow! What a wonderful Secondary Visual Arts/Music Excursion to the Capitol Theatre yesterday to view the live performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Students appreciated the artistic aspects of this colourful stage performances and thoroughly enjoyed the expereince. Thank you Miss Mason and Ms Greacen for accompanying the students and coordinating this great opportunity for your children.

Catholic Schools Week commenced on Monday - during this week we will celebrate McAuley and our other Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese. The theme this year is Engaging Faith, Minds and Community which best describes the Catholic Schools experience. It illustrates our holistic approach to educating children to become adults who personify Catholic values and serve their communities. The theme highlights the faith-based nature of our school, as well as emphasising our inclusiveness - that all are welcome!

Our Year 2M class visited the lovely residents of Blakeney Lodge on Wednesday morning. All McAuley classes K-10 are rostered to visit Blakeney Lodge. These regular visits bring joy, not only to our senior friends, but also to the students and teachers of McAuley 

Our McAuley Community Council will be holding a Street Stall on Friday 17th May. Coordinated by Anna Stubbs, the stall will take place outside "House to Home" in Wynyard Street. Any saleable goods would be most appreciated. A great load of wood will be raffled, along with a wonderful chocolate raffle. Tickets will go home this week for parents to purchase. Please ensure all ticket-stubs and money is returned by Thursday 16th at the very latest. 

We need two parents every hour from 11:30am to 4:30pm who are able to help on the stall on the 17th. Thank you Anna and Kate Stubbs, Ros Piper, Vicki Cribb, Catherine French, Sam Phillips and Michelle Crampton who have already offered to help on the day.

Gross motor skills are those which require whole body movement and which involve the large muscles of the body to perform everyday functions, such as standing, walking, running, skipping and sitting upright. It also includes eye-hand coordination skills such as ball skills.

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY 17 MAY 2019

 It’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking!

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. Although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

- Walking with them the whole way to school

- If they get the bus, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop

- If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them beat chronic problems it also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

A healthy breakfast will be served at school in the K-6 lunch area from 8am to 8:45am. Order forms will be sent home this Friday.

Remember, active kids are healthy kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 17 May 2019!

Remember until they're ten, children must always hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

Congratulations to our Secondary Age Champions from the recent Athletics Carnival. Students were presented their medallians at an Assembly on Friday.

This Year McAuley will be participating in NAPLAN testing from 14th - 24th May. This year, NAPLAN will be conducted as online tests at McAuley. The only test that will be done as a paper test will be the Year 3 Writing Test. An outline of the testing timetable is below. Some useful information regarding NAPLAN is available for parents at the NAP website https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support. There are information brochures available on the NAP website that will explain the purpose of the testing procedures.

Congratulations to our Bill Turner Cup Football team who played a great game against Tumut High on Friday. Although not coming home winners, the team all played well. Cal Keenan, Matt Mitchell, Eli Williams & Nico Canteros Paz were standouts - with Josh Smith being rewarded with a goal. Best wishes to Tumut High as they progress to the next round.

A MAGICAL PERFORMANCE!

Kindergarten and Year 1 were very excited to travel to Wagga last week to see the live stage show 'Possum Magic'. Students also enjoyed some special Possum Magic food after the show at the Civic Theatre. Thanks to our parent volunteers for coming along and enjoying the fun!

Woolworths Earn & Learn

The Woolworths Earn & Learn Program is now underway until mid June. We have a McAuley collection box in the Tumut Store for your stickers. We also have a box in the Primary Office. This is a great promotion which earns amazing school equipment for your school. Thanks for your support.
