Dear Parents

Families foster kindness and respect at home by setting expectations for manners, sharing, and helping with jobs. Guiding children to be empathetic and ethical in their independent lives can be intentional. 

Strategies for teaching children to think ethically, care about the people around them, and create positive change in the world. 

To guide ethical thinking:

• Discuss ethical dilemmas you have encountered at work, with friends, or running errands. Ask your children what they would have done in that situation.
• Talk about ethical dilemmas your children might face in the classroom, at lunch, or during recess.
• Encourage your children to see conflicts from another person’s perspective. Discuss ways they can compromise between their needs and those of others.

To foster concern for others:

• Encourage your children to really listen to siblings or peers when they are upset, especially if they don’t initially understand that person’s views.
• Ask children to consider the perspectives of people they don’t usually talk to: a new student at school, a student who is often teased, a student experiencing family trouble, or a student of a different race or religion.
• Discuss hardships you see on the news, and talk about the experiences, challenges, and feelings of people who live in different places around the world.

To teach children to be change-makers:

• Inspire children to take action around issues that affect them and their peers, such as climate change, homelessness or the healthfulness of school lunches.
• Distinguish the importance of “doing with” others from “doing for” others. Encourage children to respond to community problems by working with and listening to a diverse group, rather than spearheading new initiatives without any guidance. This is particularly relevant for high school students seeking community service opportunities. Parents can guide children to take a richer, more meaningful approach to volunteer work.
• Model that communal approach and the importance of service. Volunteer together at a charity event or set aside a day as a family to donate unwanted clothes and toys.

Thank you all families who got behind our 'Warm Winter Woolly Day' today. It was a wonderful effort and many warm items were collected to be distributed by St Vinnies.

School breaks for Term 2 holidays at 3:15pm on Friday 5th July. 

School resumes for Term 3 on Tuesday 23rd July for all students. Pupil Free (Staff Development) day on Monday 22nd. 

Sacrament of Confirmation.

On Saturday evening our Year 6 students were Confirmed in a beautiful ceremony. Father Tony Percy, the Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Canberra Gouburn, Father Brendon from the Dioscese of Melbourne and our own Father George, were the Celebrants. The students were responsive and showed an excellent understanding of their chosen Saint. 

Special thanks to those involved in the preparation of the students: Parents, Mrs Spannagle, Mrs Long and Miss Cole. The children celebrated in St Mary's Hall with their families and enjoyed a beautiful confirmation cake which was donated by our very generous and supportive 'Pie in the Sky'. 

The church was overflowing with the warmth and love of God and looked magnificent with the decorations and flowers from Mrs Guy and her team. 

Our End of Term Two Awards Assembly will be held in the School Hall on Thursday 4th July. All interested parents, grandparents and friends are welcome to attend this occasion. 

Congratulations to each and every student who will receive an Award at this Assembly. Thank you for your contribution to the spirit of our school. 

A successful Orientation Day was held last Friday for our incoming 2020 Yr 7 students. 

The students really enjoyed their day on our Secondary Campus. If you know of any families who may have missed this day - we will hold another Orientation Day later in the year. 

Some wonderful things are happening in Drama lessons on our Primary Campus. Students are really enjoying their dramatic and creative side! The photos certainly look like fun!

Last week Year 9.1 participated in an inspirational film workshop with the talented Nextwave Film Festival crew.

Not only did the students learn about the upcoming short film festival competition, but they also received instruction on how to make their own themed films. Using the school's iPads, a few cool storyboard ideas and their own imaginations, the group produced a series of film scenes through photographs. The students are being encouraged to get together a small group to enter the Nextwave competition. The competition brief requires the students to make a 6 minute film about discovery and including a game.

All interested secondary students are asked to register their interest with Ms Roche who is keen to run further workshops during activities next term.

Year 10 are currently conducting a raffle to help raise funds for their end of year excurison to Tasmania. First prize is a load of wood, second prize is a grocery hamper.

Tickets will be on sale at Secondary Parent-Teacher Interviews, our End of Term Assembly and - Year 10 will also take home a book of tickets.

Thanks to Vicki Cribb who has relieved in our Canteen for the past 3 weeks in Kellie's absence. You have done a great job Vicki. Thank you also to Alex Walker for assisting in the Primary Canteen tomorrow.
