Dear McAuley Families
It was a sea of green and gold as we prepared for the Matilda’s match on Wednesday night. It is also excellent to see the rise of interest and passion for women’s’ sport. Our staff and students have really taken on the World Cup fever. Thanks to all for your enthusiasm.
At last week’s Community Council, we progressed the planning of our Walkathon & Colour Run for later in the term. This will be a great event and a chance to re-invigorate our community fundraising for various projects on the Primary and Secondary campuses. The Community Council are seeking donations of prizes and goods from local businesses and would welcome your support. Please reach out to our Council Chair Lyndal McKay or email the Community Council on mcauley.cc@cg.catholic.edu.au. Our CC are keen to build interest and support as we move forward from a difficult couple of years.
We were also excited to announce the upcoming name change of our school to McAuley Catholic College Tumut at the beginning of 2024.
The process of re-registering our name with business, finance and education authorities has begun.
We are also consulting with CE Marketing to look at a process of re-branding and contemporising our crests and collateral to reflect our growth to a K-12 College.
Enrolments continue to be high as we begin interviews and acceptance for 2024. Demand is high for our entry points of Kindergarten, Year 7 and Year 11, 2024. Please remind friends and family to get applications in online for consideration of entry to our wonderful community next year.
Next week I will be proud to attend, along with some McAuley staff, the 2023 Catholic Education Recognition Awards. It is very pleasing to announce that Ms Heidi Stubbs, Mrs Belinda Schirmer and Mrs Jeanette Dumbrell have all been successful in being awarded “The Teaching & Learning Secondary Teacher Award” in recognition of the innovative work they have been leading in Virtual Learning for students from McAuley and other schools. This is a great testament to the best practice teaching and learning that is happening here at McAuley. The ground-breaking work that is happening in Stage 6, along with the high-level results we are obtaining in literacy and numeracy in the Primary School stand us among the leaders in the Riverina and Canberra Goulburn Archdiocese.
Throughout this year we have been participating in “The Resilience Project” with classes from K-11 working through the themes and materials. The growing importance of good mental health is well known to us and as a staff we are committed to assisting our students build their emotional literacy skills along with their curriculum knowledge. In conjunction with our Resilience Project sessions, we have been practicing Christian Meditation and working to make this a part of our weekly timetable. Studies are clear that mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools for our mental health, lower our stress, anxiety, and support good relationships.
A combination of practice of mindfulness and meditation provide benefits such as:
- Stress relief
- Feeling happier and more focussed
- Increasing energy
- Boosting immune system
- Improved connections with self and others
Please see www.thereslienceproject.com.au for more information and support.

McAuley is continuing to use a practical and evidence-based approach to teaching and learning, providing the education our students and families deserve. This teaching approach, known as High Impact Teaching Practice (HITP), guides the way in which every teacher across the school plans, delivers and supports learning for every student. The approach has been developed and designed based on national and global research into how children learn, known as the Science of Learning. High Impact Teaching Practice involves embedding evidence-based pedagogy in all classrooms, informed by Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, supported by high-quality curriculum resources. Some of our teachers have completed intensive Professional Development in the past few months and we have also had teachers visit some great schools in Canberra to support us on this journey.
On Wednesday 9th August McAuley hosted our interschool Public Speaking Competition against St Patricks Gundagai. All of the McAuley students gave outstanding presentations and each student is to be congratulated for their efforts.

What a fun morning in Year 3! They have been learning about procedural texts, so they followed a recipe to use the mushrooms they have grown to make a mushroom risotto in the slow cooker. Mixed reviews, with some students loving mushrooms, some not so much and others gave it a go and did not mind them.
Fee statements were emailed out this week. If you did not receive yours please phone the school.
Fees are to be paid via Bpay NOT Compass.
McAuley welcomed Kinder 2024 students from Tumut Community Preschool and their brilliant staff to spend some time with our current Kinder class. They read 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne and made masks, went fishing for monkeys and some fun fine motor activities. Students also had recess together and enjoyed playtime. We can't wait for these children to visit again.
David Enever joined McAuley primary students singing songs we have listened to and remember from last year. These include 'Be the Light', 'Come Join the Dance' and 'Do What is Right'. Students danced and sang along, played some fish and loaves guitar, and performed Jesus healing a blind man. We had a great time and will continue to listen to these amazing songs with brilliant messages.
Friday August 11th was our McAuley Kinders 100 days of school. Wow! They are truly something special these children and to celebrate this milestone we had a day long party. Miss Groves and Ms Blundell suddenly had grey hair and used walking sticks and dressed as 100-year-olds. The class enjoyed some dancing for 100 seconds, made 100 days crowns, 100 numbers artworks and ate cupcakes that Mr Moore organised for us. It has been a wonderful day, congratulations Kindergarten 2023.
Year 10 Work Experience is Optional not Compulsory.
Work Experience is a chance to get a feel for day-to-day working life in a particular job. At the end of a placement, students may decide that career is the right one for them, or it could be ruled out, or you could discover an alternative which suits you even more.
The students who are considering work experience have collected the preparation package. If they have not, they need to see Mrs Croft.
Due to so many events on the calendar there is no formal work experience week.
Students can organise work experience during term 3 and 4. They must take in account major assessments (they may need to speak to the teacher prior) such as exams and compulsory excursions.
Students will have to catch up on work they miss during the work experience and have the paperwork in 3 weeks before the placement.
Catholic School Parents Canberra and Goulburn are offering a free Family Event with Andrew Fuller on Tuesday 5 September, 6pm. Parents and carers can register to attend in-person at John Paul II College or there is a live streaming option.
